"Great property and location, let down by frontline service — but rescued by the GM"
The Hilton Da Nang is a genuinely excellent property in a fantastic location, and as a Hilton Gold member I was looked after well. But the stay got off to an alarming start. On being sent up to room 1801, the elevator doors opened to a corridor thick with the smell of paint thinner / methylated spirits — strong enough that my eyes watered, my throat went dry, and I struggled to breathe. It clearly would have seeped into the room overnight. We asked to move immediately and the team did relocate us quickly to 2301, same room class. I requested a call from the GM, which came that same evening. My initial frustration was that the smell was first attributed to me being “sensitive to paint” — when fumes that overpowering in an open corridor, straight off the lift, are an environmental issue on the whole floor, not guest sensitivity. It also became clear the floor hadn’t been physically checked before that first call. To his credit, GM Perrera turned it around. He took genuine ownership — checked on me again the following day, confirmed paint work on the floor, assured us no further painting would occur near us, and said he would take steps to replace the paint being used. The rest of the stay was completely fine, no fumes at all. That kind of proactive, personal service recovery is exactly what you hope for. Breakfast was a highlight — excellent noodles and a great make-your-own banh mi station, though they did forget our coffee order. The honest overall: a great building in a superb spot, but frontline staff warmth and competency lag a little — broadly, I find service in Vietnam sits about half a notch below Thailand. The property and the GM are the reasons to stay; the everyday service is where there’s room to grow.
