Introduction The ancient town of Hoi An is a complex of architectural relics located downstream of the Thu Bon River, in Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province. Hoi An was once a bustling international trading port from the 15th to the 19th century, where Japanese, Chinese, and many other merchant ships met. The Old Town has been preserved almost intact with more than 1,000 architectural relics, including houses, assembly halls, communal houses, pagodas, ancient wells, and clan temples — recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1999. Strolling along the narrow streets, visitors can feel the blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese culture in every ancient house. In particular, the shimmering lantern lights at night create an enchanting and unforgettable scene — a distinctive feature found nowhere else but Hoi An. Highlights Chua Cau (Japanese Covered Bridge) — the symbol of Hoi An, a unique 17th-century structure featured on the 20,000 VND banknote. Phung Hung Ancient House and Tan Ky Ancient House — perfectly preserved, reflecting the lifestyle of merchants from over 200 years ago. Phuc Kien Assembly Hall — distinctive Chinese-Vietnamese architecture, a place to worship Thiên Hậu and hold traditional festivals. Hoi An Market — a place to enjoy local cuisine: cao lau, Quang-style noodles, and Hoi An banh mi. Full Moon Night in the Old Town — all electric lights are turned off, lanterns are lit, and floating flower lanterns are released on the Hoai River every month. Weekend pedestrian streets — a lively space for food, art, and handicraft shopping. Useful Tips Visit before 9:00 AM or after 4:00 PM to avoid the harsh sun and the busiest crowds of the day. Wear comfortable, modest clothing when entering assembly halls, communal houses, and pagodas in the Old Town. Buy one combo ticket (80,000 VND for Vietnamese visitors / 120,000 VND for foreign visitors) — it allows entry to 5 selected sites in the Old Town. Avoid the Lunar New Year period and summer weekends (June–August) — crowds are very large, and transportation and dining prices increase. Combine your visit with Thanh Ha Pottery Village, Tra Que Vegetable Village, and Cu Lao Cham (speedboat from Cua Dai Port, about 30 minutes).
