Introduction Han River Bridge—the country’s first swing bridge—was inaugurated in 2000. The bridge is 487.7 meters long and 12.9 meters wide, consisting of 11 spans connecting the two central districts of Hai Chau and Son Tra—two of the city’s main thoroughfares, Le Duan Street and Pham Van Dong Street. Its structure features prestressed reinforced concrete and two cable-stayed spans with a total length of 122.7 meters; the bridge’s main girder and tower are made of steel, and the deck is made of reinforced concrete. Beyond its transportation function, Han River Bridge also holds great aesthetic value, and many people say it is as beautiful as a painting in the heart of the city. This special swing bridge was designed and constructed by Vietnamese experts and engineers during the 1998–2000 period. What is even more remarkable is that 30% of the construction budget for Han River Bridge—out of a total of VND 117 billion—was contributed by the city’s residents. The purpose of rotating Han River Bridge is to serve waterway traffic and clear the way for passing boats and ships. Every day, at around 11:00 PM, the middle section of the bridge rotates 90 degrees around its axis and aligns with the river’s flow, allowing large vessels to pass through. Around 12:00 AM, the bridge rotates back to its original position. Han River Bridge is located right in the center of Da Nang, connecting the lively western bank with the Son Tra area on the eastern bank, making it very convenient to combine with a city walk, dining, and riverside sightseeing. During the day, the bridge has a modern, streamlined appearance; at night, the deck and lighting system create a very distinctive scene of the coastal city. It is also one of Da Nang’s most memorable symbols, often visited by many travelers to experience the urban rhythm along the river. If you come on a weekend evening, you will have the chance to watch the bridge rotate—a very unique experience that few bridges in Vietnam can offer. Highlights Vietnam’s first swing bridge, creating a distinctive mark among Da Nang’s bridges. Located in the city center, convenient for moving between downtown and riverside areas. Its architecture combines reinforced concrete structure and cable-stayed spans, looking modern and solid. The scenery along both banks of the Han River is beautiful, especially when viewed from afar at night. The bridge rotation for waterway traffic is a rare, iconic experience. Built with contributions from local residents, giving it great sentimental significance for Da Nang. Useful Tips If you want to see the bridge rotate, arrive on Saturday or Sunday night, around 11:00 PM to 12:00 AM. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a light jacket if you plan to stand by the river for a long time at night. There is no admission fee, but dining, parking, or nearby experiences may have separate charges, so ask in advance to avoid confusion. For better photos and smaller crowds, arrive a little earlier than the bridge rotation time to choose a good spot. You can combine your visit with nearby central attractions such as Dragon Bridge, the Han River waterfront, or a stroll along Tran Phu - Le Duan streets.
